Knee Replacement

Annually, over four million Americans seek medical treatment for various knee ailments. 245,000 of these people undergo knee replacement surgery. For the most part, the procedure, which is growing in popularity and was developed in 1974, is safe and effective. The artificial components implanted during the surgical procedure can last in excess of two decades.

Three bones come together to form the knee joint: the femur, which is located in the thigh, the tibia, which is the shinbone, and the patella, which is the kneecap. When these bones deteriorate, a prosthesis, which is usually constructed of a metal alloy and plastic, is implanted.

While knee joint replacement can bring relief to knee injury victims and arthritis sufferers, not all of these procedures are successful. In fact, it has recently come to light that one prosthetic knee manufacturer, Sulzer Orthopedic, may have produced defective artificial knees.
