Narcolepsy Drugs: Overview

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that affects approximately 135,000 Americans. Although the disorder sometimes appears at an early age, people do not usually suffer from the full range of symptoms until they are between fifteen and thirty years of age. Narcoleptics suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness and can have bouts of sudden paralysis while experiencing extreme emotions or just upon falling asleep. Narcoleptics may also experience vivid dream-like images and hallucinations when they have just fallen asleep.

Narcolepsy is a variation of the sleep disorder hypersomnia, which can cause people to sleep approximately one-fourth more than normal. Narcolepsy is dangerous because sleep can occur during any monotonous activity, including while driving.

It is not clear exactly what causes narcolepsy but many things are known to cause hypersomnia, including drug use, anemia, multiple sclerosis, depression, hypothyroidism and liver failure.

Drugs used to treat narcolepsy can have side effects.
