Vibrio Vulnificus: Overview
Vibrio Vulnificus is a naturally occurring marine bacterium found in shallow coastal waters located in temperate climates, such as the Gulf of Mexico. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the bacterium has caused over 80 deaths during the last five years.
This bacterium accumulates in clams, oysters, shellfish and finfish. It does not normally cause illness in otherwise healthy individuals. However, its effect in those with liver problems can be severe. Individuals with liver disease are 80 times more likely to get sick from eating oysters contaminated with Vibrio Vulnificus and more than 200 times more likely to die, than otherwise healthy individuals.
Vibrio Vulnificus may be killed through proper cooking techniques.
