General Anesthesia: Overview
Errors in administering general anesthesia can result in death and other serious complications. One of the most common problems is a condition known as "awareness during general anesthesia," where the patient is not completely "out." Awareness may occur because of inadequate anesthetic product labeling which leads to dosage errors. In addition, doctors, anesthesiologists, and other medical staff who do not remain vigilant during the surgical procedure may administer too little anesthetic. Furthermore, vaporizer leaks, intravenous infusion errors, and problems during a syringe swap can hamper anesthetic delivery.
Patients who have experienced awareness during general anesthesia report hearing doctors communicate during the procedure. In addition, many patients experience a feeling of paralysis and helplessness which leads to panic and future emotional problems such as anxiety disorders, sleep interruption, flashbacks or recollection of the intra-operative event, and a preoccupation with death. The patient often develops post traumatic stress disorder which can adversely impact his or her personal and professional life.
