Pseudomonas Bacteria: Overview
Pseudomonas bacteria are motile, gram-negative rods specifically associated with water and wet conditions. Resistant to most antibiotics, the bacteria are capable of surviving in conditions most organisms cannot tolerate. Pseudomonas bacteria are a main cause of hospital-related infections, easily attaching themselves to plastic tubing, rubber hoses, and even stainless steel. The organisms target burn victims, patients with depressed immune systems, and individuals on respirators. Pseudomonas infection is also commonly found in cystic fibrosis patients. The pathogen can affect a patient's blood, skin, bones, eyes, ears, urinary tract, heart valve, and lungs.
Recently, Japan's Olympus Optical Co. announced the recall of more than 14,000 bronchoscopes after over 100 patients who had undergone a bronchoscopy at Johns Hopkins Hospital tested positive for the pseudomonas bacteria.
