A concussion may occur after a minor physical impact between the head and some object. It usually is accompanied by a brief period of unconsciousness and perhaps memory loss. There is usually no actual structural damage to the brain. However, if you suffer from a concussion you may experience, among other symptoms, loss of balance, memory problems, emotional changes such as depression, and an inability to concentrate. These symptoms typically last between a few days and several weeks (depending on the severity of the impact).
One of the significant dangers associated with concussions is the chance that serious complications may take several hours or even days to manifest themselves. Even if you feel OK immediately after an impact it is nevertheless advisable to seek medical attention.
