Delirium: Overview

Delirium differs from dementia in that it manifests itself suddenly and may be reversible while dementia progresses steadily over time and typically worsens with age. Delirium is an altered mental state in which the patient cannot concentrate or think clearly. Delirium may be caused by something as simple and easily corrected as dehydration or an empty stomach. However, serious infections such as gangrene may also cause delirium.
