Menstruation: Overview

Menstruation, or shedding the lining of the uterus, occurs approximately once per month, beginning during puberty and ending when the woman is around fifty years of age. Menstruation is typically characterized by bleeding through the vagina, and it should not occur when a woman is pregnant. Hormones have a great influence on the menstrual cycle and often dictate its schedule.

Menstruation may be preceded by premenstrual syndrome and may be accompanied by cramps caused by contractions of the uterus. Abnormal menstrual cycles include, but are not limited to, periods that are painful, too long, too short, not often enough, too light, and more. There are a variety of causes for irregular menstruation.
