Vaginal Abnormalities & Conditions: Overview

The vagina is part of the female reproductive system. It consists of the introitus, or vaginal opening, which leads to the interior of the vagina. The vaginal cavity is typically three to four inches in depth, with muscles close to the opening that control its diameter. The cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus, is located at the top of the vagina.

Some problems associated with the vagina include tearing of the vaginal wall, dehiscence (splitting of the tissue), infection, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, and foul odor.
