Liver Failure: Overview

The liver is one of the most complex organs in the human body. Located in the abdomen, it has many duties including processing harmful substances, aiding in the digestive process, and producing cholesterol.

Liver failure, also known as hepatotoxicty, is a catastrophic occurrence and typically only happens when a large part of the liver is damaged beyond repair. A person with liver failure usually suffers from jaundice, a condition indicated by a yellowish coloring of the skin. While in some patients liver failure can be managed through diet, most require a liver transplant in order to survive. Unfortunately, many prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause liver damage and subsequent liver failure.
