Ovarian Cysts: Overview

Women who ovulate often develop fluid-filled sacs on their ovaries; such sacs are called ovarian cysts. Every ovulating woman develops a cyst during each cycle. This cyst contains the egg, which matures in the cyst during the cycle. If the ovary does not ovulate, the cyst will not flush from the body during menstruation and will continue to grow. These cysts are called functional cysts and typically go away within a couple of months. There are, however, several other types of ovarian cysts that may require surgical removal.

Other types of ovarian cysts include, but are not limited to, dermoid cysts, cystadenoma cysts, endometrioma cysts, and polycystic ovarian disease. These cysts occur less frequently and are considered by medical professionals to be "abnormal." These cysts often occur as the result of a hormonal imbalance.
