Jaundice

Jaundice is often a precursor to more serious liver ailments, including liver failure. The condition is characterized by a yellowing of the skin caused by the liver's reduced ability to process bilirubin, a pigment found in bile. Bilirubin is a byproduct of the body's removal of old red blood cells. Jaundice often occurs in newborns, and if left untreated a more serious and potentially deadly condition known as Kernicterus may develop.
