Dexamethasone is a drug sometimes given to premature infants to help prevent the occurrence of chronic lung disease.
In January 2001 researchers discovered that dexamethasone does not provide any significant benefits to premature infants and may actually do more harm than good. Dexamethasone was shown to increase the occurrence of perforation of the intestines. As such, the use of dexamethasone in premature infants to prevent chronic lung disease is no longer recommended.
