Propofol / Diprivan
Propofol, also known a Diprivan, is a general anesthetic manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Propofol is often used with patients in the intensive care unit to induce unconsciousness. Severely injured patients may need to be sedated in order to allow doctors a chance to insert various mechanical apparatuses.
Recently, concern has mounted regarding the use of Propofol in head injury victims. Several head injury victims have suffered fatal heart attacks after the administration of Propofol. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration recently warned doctors not to use Propofol with their pediatric patients. The drug is not approved for pediatric use.
