TPA: Overview
TPA is a drug used to prevent or dissolve blood clots and is used to treat stroke victims. TPA can only be used within three hours of the onset of a stroke and cannot be used for hemorrhagic strokes (bleeding in the brain).
TPA can be a tremendous lifesaver as most strokes are not of the hemorrhagic variety. A study completed in February 2000 found that many healthcare professionals and institutions either fail to give TPA to eligible stroke victims or give the drug to those who do not qualify (over three hours / bleeding in brain). Administering TPA incorrectly, or failing to administer it at all, can be fatal.
