Herceptin / Trastuzumab
Herceptin is a drug used to combat breast cancer that has spread beyond the immediate breast area. This drug is typically used in patients who have elevated levels of the HER2 protein. Hoffmann-La Roche manufactures Herceptim. The manufacturer estimates that over 25,000 cancer patients have used Herceptim.
Recently, Hoffmann-La Roche issued a new health warning about the drug. Since Herceptim's approval, at least sixty-two patients have experienced severe adverse reactions to the drug, including several fatalities. Dangerous allergic and respiratory reactions were the most frequently cited problems.
