Seldane: Overview
Seldane and Seldane-D, the allergy medications manufactured by Hoescht Marion Roussel and Baker Norton Pharmaceuticals, were removed from the market in 1998 after the FDA discovered that the drugs caused rare but serious heart problems when they were taken in combination with certain other drugs, especially antibiotics and anti-fungals.
Seldane and Seldane-D contain terfenadine, a substance believed to cause certain heart conditions. The manufacturers decided to remove Seldane and Seldane-D after they developed a safer alternative, the popular allergy drug Allegra. Allegra contains fexofenadine hydrochloride rather than terfenadine; as such, Allegra has the same beneficial effects of Seldane and Seldane-D without the dangerous propensity to cause heart problems.
