Geodon / Ziprasidone
Geodon, also known as ziprasidone, is a drug used to treat schizophrenia. The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2001 and is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.
Prior to FDA approval there was significant concern that ziprasidone or Geodon could cause heart rhythm irregularities. While Geodon won approval in spite of these concerns, doctors have been advised to monitor their Geodon patients closely in an effort to spot heart rhythm problems early.
In September 2003, the FDA recommended that six atypical antipsychotics, including Geodon, carry a diabetes warning because of a study that linked three of the six medications to the disorder.
