Airlines
Americans have been fascinated with air travel since the Wright brothers' 1903 flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Today there are hundreds of airlines that carry millions of passengers to and from their destinations. We expect these airlines to carry us safely and efficiently; unfortunately, that is not always the case. According to recent plane crash statistics, in the last fifteen years there have been over 100 major air disasters that have killed and injured thousands. There is growing concern that the popularity of air travel and the related increase in airplane traffic will only make matters worse in the coming years. With the proliferation of low budget carriers come concerns about maintenance, poor training, and aircraft age. Increasingly, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the target of criticism for not adequately regulating the industry. All these developments have many safety experts calling for regulatory reform.
