Prevnar Meningitis Vaccine: Overview

Several types of bacteria, all of which are commonly found throughout the environment, may cause bacterial meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is a serious condition that is characterized by symptoms including, but not necessarily limited to, fever, stiff neck, sore throat, nausea, irritability, confusion, fatigue, seizures, internal bleeding, low blood pressure, paralysis, coma and eventually death.

Bacterial meningitis can progress rapidly and is especially common in children between the ages of one month and two years. The condition warrants immediate medical care and doctors who suspect a patient is suffering from bacterial meningitis may administer antibiotics before the diagnosis is even confirmed. If medical attention is delayed, the chance of brain damage and death in bacterial meningitis patients is great. See a doctor immediately if you suspect that you or your loved one may have meningitis.

Prevnar is a vaccine manufactured by Wyeth Lederle Laboratories and approved for use in children in February 2000. The vaccine prevents bacterial infections such as bacterial meningitis and bacteremia (blood infection), which may be caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium.

Some critics charge that Prevnar is not effective in preventing illnesses caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium. In addition, these critics question Prevnar's safety, particularly the vaccine's interaction with other vaccines, its potential to cause seizures and SIDS. However, most doctors report that they are satisfied with Prevnar's safety and efficacy.

See a doctor if your child has experienced an adverse reaction to Prevnar. In addition, it may be important to contact an attorney who can help you protect your legal rights. Please keep in mind that there may be time limits within which you must commence suit.
