BMW Cruise Control: Overview

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, BMW recalled 410,000 vehicles built between 1992 and 1997 to repair faulty cruise controls. Recall notices were sent to owners beginning in October 1997.

An attorney representing a 50-year-old woman facing two counts of vehicular homicide plans to use evidence of BMW's faulty cruise control system in her defense. Mary Hill, 50, of Sanford, Florida, allegedly drove her 1996 BMW from 0 to 70 mph before the car skidded and crashed into a tree, killing her 13-year-old daughter and her daughter's best friend. Hill's attorney plans to seek the court's permission to subpoena BMW's records, as well as records from the BMW dealership from which Hill purchased the car. He also plans on using evidence of two similar crashes involving BMW's cruise control system.
