Researchers at Ohio State University recently determined that consumers who used older versions of Colgate-Palmolive's Viadent products, including toothpaste and mouthwash, are ten times as likely to develop oral leukoplakia (potentially cancerous mouth lesions) as people who used competing products. Older versions of the Viadent products contained sanguinarine, an antibacterial agent that Colgate recently eliminated from the manufacturing process. Researchers examined one hundred and forty-eight people diagnosed with oral leukoplakia. They discovered that those who used certain Viadent products which contained sanguinarine were more likely to develop lesions associated with oral leukoplakia.
