Prometrium / Progesterone
Prometrium is a form of natural progesterone, a female steroid sex hormone secreted by the corpus luteum to prepare a woman's uterus for implantation of a fertilized egg and during pregnancy to prevent rejection of the fetus. Used during estrogen therapy, Prometrium is designed to prevent cell overgrowth in the uterine lining in postmenopausal women who have not had a hysterectomy. The drug is also indicated in amenorrhea (abnormal absence of menstruation).
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998 and made by Schering-Plough Corporation, Prometrium Capsules are made from yams structurally identical to naturally occurring progesterone. Women who have liver disease or breast cancer should not take Prometrium. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to fatigue, headache, breast tenderness, dizziness, abdominal bloating and vaginal discharge.
A black box warning in the package insert for Prometrium recommends against the use of progesterone injection during the first four months of pregnancy. Progesterone drugs used during the first trimester have been linked to genital abnormalities in male and female fetuses. They may also delay spontaneous abortion.
