1973-1987 C/K Pickup Trucks
According to a May 2003 report published by the Los Angeles Times, General Motors Corporation has paid nearly $500 million to settle hundreds of lawsuits filed over a defective line of pickup trucks. The suits involve a model of C/K trucks built from 1973 to 1987 with fuel tanks mounted outside the vehicles' protective frames. A federal judge in Montana released the information in a case brought by the estate of a family killed in a C/K accident.
The lawsuits, which have resulted in 331 individual settlement agreements totaling $495 million, allege the outside fuel tanks are prone to explode during an accident. A federal investigation into the C/K pickup was dropped in 1994 after GM, which eventually changed the model's design, agreed to pay $51 million for the establishment of numerous safety programs. After the inquiry was dropped, however, dozens of people reportedly burned in truck accidents involving the defective C/K model.
