In July 2003, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began an investigation of airbags installed in 2000 and 2001 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans. According to numerous consumer reports, airbags installed on the models have consistently failed to deploy during crashes. Ford Motor Company has reported 260 complaints of failed airbag inflation to the NHTSA, none involving injury or death.
