2000 Lincoln LS Back Seat Latch

A $33 million award in a lawsuit filed against Ford Motor Company over faulty back seat latches installed in the 2000 Lincoln LS has safety experts contemplating a recall of the vehicles. A Fulton County, Georgia jury awarded Rhonda Sasser the damages in March 2004 after a two-week trial. Sasser claims a back fold-down seat failed to securely latch during an accident and collapsed on her six-year-old daughter, causing permanent paralysis from her chest down.

During the trial, plaintiff attorneys argued that Ford knew of the latch defect as far back as 1993 but failed to make changes to the design until 2001. The lawsuit is the first to be filed against Ford over the latches.
