2004 Mississippi Amtrak Train Derailment
An Amtrak train derailed outside of Jackson, Mississippi around 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 6, 2004. According to initial reports, one person aboard Amtrak's City of New Orleans died and dozens more were injured when all nine cars derailed near the town of Flora. The train was traveling from New Orleans to Chicago.
Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the derailment but early reports indicate it was an accident. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration have already begun an investigation. The FBI has sent agents to the scene as a precaution.
The track is owned and maintained by Canadian National/Illinois Central Railway. Three other trains have derailed within a five-mile stretch of the accident since 1994.
